Gestalt: Figure-Ground Relationship (EXAMPLE)

Directions:

  1. Write the definition of the principle.
  2. Find 2 websites that demonstrate the Figure-Ground Relationship of design.
  3. Take a screenshot (Mac: Command+Shift+4, PC: “Print Screen” button and paste into Photoshop).
  4. Post “Website Title” and URL (make it link).
  5. Post the screenshot image.  Size to “Medium”.  On “Link URL”, select “File URL”.
  6. Add a description of 100+ words identifying & describing the Figure-Ground relationships within the web design.
  7. Repeat steps 2-5 for 2nd website. (note: WordPress has a “Word count”; you should have more than 200+ words total.)

Elements are perceived as either figures (distinct elements of focus) or ground (the background or landscape on which the figures rest).
